Meet the Team: Marcus Sandbacka

We are thrilled to introduce Marcus Sandbacka, our new Product Manager, who joined OrbitMI team with our recent acquisition of Gale Force. Marcus brings a strong background in naval architecture, product management, and large-scale EU projects, with a career focused on ship performance, fuel efficiency, and customer-driven innovation.

Could you share a bit about your professional journey and your experience in product management within the maritime tech industry? What drew you here?

My interest in both technology and shipping led me to study naval architecture. Since then, my career has always been connected to the maritime sector, from roles focused on ship performance, fuel efficiency, and product quality to leadership positions in product management.

Over time, I’ve worked more closely with end customers, ensuring that products deliver real operational value. I’ve also been involved in large-scale EU projects focused on interoperability and data exchange between maritime systems.

What drew me to this industry is its unique mix of engineering, operations, and global collaboration—plus the chance to contribute to a sector that is technically challenging and vital to world trade.

What excites you most about joining OrbitMI?

I’m excited to join a company whose mission aligns with my passion. OrbitMI’s goal of unlocking the full potential of maritime data matches my background in product development, integration, and collaboration.

I look forward to helping deliver tools that are not only innovative but also practical and impactful for owners, operators, and charterers.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges in the maritime tech sector right now?

Opportunities: The potential of digitalization is enormous, especially in combining data from multiple sources, applying AI for decision support, and improving environmental performance.

Challenges: The industry still struggles with fragmented standards, legacy systems, and slow adoption. To succeed, solutions must be reliable, intuitive, and deliver immediate value while also supporting long-term sustainability goals.

Can you highlight any upcoming projects or initiatives you'll be focusing on in your new role?

I’ll be focusing on enhancing product usability and improving interoperability between maritime platforms, reflecting what customers truly need.

I’m also looking forward to projects that expand the use of predictive analytics and real-time data to give operators better insight into both historical performance and future operations.

Who inspires you?

I’m inspired by leaders who combine technical expertise with empathy and vision—people who not only innovate but also bring others with them on the journey.

If you could instantly become an expert in any skill, what would it be and why?

I’d like to be able to play a musical instrument flawlessly. The rest of my family enjoys music, so it would be great to join in more fully.

What's your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?

I enjoy a mix of being active and relaxing. Sometimes it’s a bike ride on a forest trail, other times it’s enjoying a good meal and a movie with my family.

What’s something you’re passionate about outside of work?

I’m passionate about traveling with my family and also enjoy building and refining our house, which is an ongoing project.
